Eating Basque cheese cake at water table – GUF TOKYO

Japan Restaurants

Fashionable cafe which became popular for its water table

Among the many popular cafes in Shin-Ohkubo is GUF TOKYO which opened at the end of 2022. It became the talk of the town because of its water table!

Filled with shallow water

There is actually a water basin filled with water where you can enjoy coffee. There is no glass on top of the water so be careful! You’ll get wet or things you try to place on top of it will get wet.

The place is small with only about 10 seats but the high-ceiling and the big windows make the room look spacious. Customers sit around the big water table. The seats are stools so it’s not for going with small children or staying for a long time.

We went on a weekday around noon and we were ushered in right away. There was only one other group there. There used to be a long line but now the crowd has thinned out. However, it could be crowded on weekends.

Rules for ordering

There is a rule at this store. When ordering, each customer has to order both the cheese cake and a drink – rule applied until 19:00. After 19:00 you can order just the drink per person. Take out is not available so if you’re full it’s better to come another time when you’re hungry.

The rule is announced at the entrance

Menu

You can choose from among their signature basque cheese cake – plain, matcha, chocolate, etc.

Matcha

They serve the cake (on a stone) and drink on a white stone platter in front of each customer.

The cheese cake is as delicious as it looks! It has a texture like smooth custard cream. It’s light and not heavy at all.

They have a wide variety of drinks including “ring latte” which is popular in S. Korea now.
