Exploring Kamakura on Enoden

Japan - Sight seeing
Train going towards Kamakura

For a memorable day trip from Tokyo (about an hour) or Yokohama (about 30 minutes), consider taking a Kamakura travel adventure on the Enoshima Electric Railway, also known as the Enoden Line. This scenic 10-km railway connects the coastal towns of Fujisawa, Enoshima and Kamakura, offering stunning views of the ocean and tourist  stops along the way.

Stops on the Enoden

Enoden, runs through the historic city of Kamakura passing by stops that lead to popular tourist attractions. This picturesque train ride offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Kamakura while capturing memorable moments at photo spots along the route.

The stops I mention on the Enoden route (using the numbers on the train map) are:

Fujisawa 01, Enoshima 06, Koshigoe 07, Kamakura Koko Mae 08, Inamuragasaki 10, Gokurakuji 11, Hase 12, Kamakura 15.

Fujisawa 01

Train going towards Kamakura

Fujisawa is the terminal on one end of Enoden with Kamakura the terminal on the other end. From Fujisawa to Enoshima you will feel like you’re on an ordinary streetcar going through the city streets. After Enoshima station heading towards Kamakura, it becomes scenic with views of the hills and the Pacific Ocean shoreline.

Kamakura Koko Mae 08

Kamakura Koko Mae station located right next to the beach is THE spot for anime fans. The location for the popular basketball-themed anime, “Slam Dunk” is at this station. The crossing is always crowded with anime enthusiasts taking photos at the crossing of the TV anime’s opening scene. It’s too crowded recently that there are warning signs not to get too distracted taking photos and to be careful of the approaching trains. Kamakura High School is just up the hill but it is a real school with real students and real classes going on so do not trespass.

If you want to feel the ocean breeze, get off at Koshigoe station and walk towards the beach. Near the station, local fishermen are often seen preparing freshly caught “shirasu” (little white fish) for the market.

Or you can get of at Inamuragasaki station, where on a clear day, from Inamuragasaki beach you can see Enoshima, Mount Fuji, and the Izu and Miura peninsulas.

Gokurakuji 11

The train travels very close to houses on the way to Gokurakuji station. So close that you will feel you can almost touch them. Gokurakuji station is a quiet (maybe not that quiet anymore with all the tourists), charming, retro station with many old temples in the area. The temple gardens are especially beautiful when the cherry blossoms (late March to early April) and hydrangeas are in full bloom (in June during the rainy season).
