Fujiya Hotel – Miyanoshita, Hakone

Hakone
The Main building

Fujiya Hotel, located in Miyanoshita, is a historic landmark with its buildings registered as important cultural assets. This classic hotel has been welcoming guests since 1878 and is one of the oldest in Japan. It is known for its serene gardens, elegant architecture, great restaurants, and impeccable service. After a two-year extensive renovation work to welcome guests for the Tokyo Olympics, the hotel reopened its doors in July 2020. The classic atmosphere has been retained but the building has been seismically retrofitted – classically charming and safe!

A taste of history – so many famous people!

By staying here you will be joining the ranks of many famous people who’ve stayed here -Charlie Chaplin, Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, Dwight Eisenhower, John Lennon, Princes and Emperors, Japanese authors Natsume Soseki, Yukio Mishima, etc. The list goes on. You’ll feel their presence as you see their photos in the hallways and stay in the rooms they’ve stayed.

Chrysanthemum Room – John Lennon

We stayed at the Flower Palace (the other buildings are the Main, Comfy Lodge and Restful Cottage, Forest Wing, and the Japanese annex Kikka-so) in the Chrysanthemum Room. The room had a classic ambience and we got very excited when we found out that John Lennon had stayed here!

Dining options

There are three main restaurants at Fujiya Hotel.

The main dining room The Fujiya is our favorite. As you enter and look up at the high ceiling, you will notice 636 paintings of plants found in the Japan Alps. They serve excellent breakfast and French cuisine for lunch and dinner. The curry menu is famous as Emperor Showa’s favorite food here.

Cascade Room, originally a banquet hall with stained glass walls, was restored as a restaurant during the recent renovation. They serve Western-style food.

You can try the Japanese menu at the Japanese annex Kikka-so which was built in 1895 as a villa for the Imperial family. Their kaiseki dining experience is exquisite, offering guests the chance to sample traditional Japanese cuisine.

You can also relax and have drinks in their cozy bar, or have coffee and their famous apple pie in the lounge with a view of the garden

Enjoy the garden

There is a garden behind the lounge where you can enjoy the seasons: cherry blossoms in the spring, azaleas in late spring, hydrangeas in early summer and autumn foliage in late fall. At the top there is an outdoor pool which can be used in the summer. At Kikka-so there is also a Japanese garden where you can stroll and enjoy the seasons.
