What is Hachiko?

Shibuya is famous for its scramble intersection.

Crowds of people move in multiple directions when the stop signal turns green skillfully not colliding with each other while gigantic screens from corner buildings try to attract the pedestrians’ attention.

Then there is the iconic bronze statue of the loyal dog Hachiko.

The true story of Hachiko is one of the most famous and touching stories of a dog and many dog lovers from around the world can come to pay tribute to this amazing dog in Shibuya.

In honor of Hachiko’s unwavering loyalty, the city of Shibuya erected a bronze statue in his memory, which has become an iconic landmark and a popular meeting spot.

He stands majestically just outside Shibuya station before you make the plunge to cross the chaotic scramble crossing.

There’s also another memorial honoring Hachiko. At Shibuya station, the station entrance that is closest to the statue is called “Hachiko-guchi”.

So if you’re coming to Shibuya by train to see Hachiko, look for the “Hachiko-guchi” entrance or exit. 

Akita dog

Hachiko is an Akita.

The Akita is a large and powerful breed of dog originating from Japan which has become increasingly popular worldwide.

They were once used as hunting dogs and were also symbolized as guardians of nobility and good fortune.

It is known for its distinct physical appearance and strong personality.

Akitas have a big and muscular build, with a broad head and small, triangular eyes.

They have a thick double coat, which comes in various colors including white, brindle, and red.

Akitas are also characterized by their curled tails that rest over their backs.

In terms of personality, Akitas are known to be loyal, brave, and independent.

They are highly intelligent and have a strong protective instinct, making them excellent guard dogs.

However, they can also be reserved and aloof towards strangers, which requires early socialization and training.

Though they can be reserved with strangers, Akitas are generally affectionate and protective towards their loved ones.

Akitas are regarded as national treasures in Japan and hold significant historical and cultural importance. 

Chuken Hachiko

The Akita breed is known for its loyalty and devotion, and no story exemplifies this more than the tale of Hachiko, the famous Japanese dog.

People call him “chuken Hachiko” or the faithful dog Hachiko.

Hachi was born on November 23, 1923, in present-day Odate, Akita Prefecture and adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at the University of Tokyo.

Ueno and Hachiko’s routine was to walk to Shibuya station where the professor would take the train to his university.

Then Hachiko would eagerly await his owner’s return at the Shibuya train station.

Unfortunately, Hachiko’s owner passed away suddenly, but that did not deter the loyal Akita.

For nearly a decade, Hachiko continued to wait at the train station, hoping to see his beloved owner once again.

People who witnessed Hachiko’s unwavering loyalty were moved to tears, and the story of his devotion spread throughout Japan and beyond.

The touching bond between Hachiko and his owner resonates with many, as it showcases the unbreakable bond and loyalty that a dog is capable of.

Hachiko’s story has inspired countless individuals and has become a symbol of unconditional love.

Hachiko turns 100 years old

Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko stands at Shibuya train station paying tribute to his incredible loyalty and the unbreakable bond between man and dog.

The heartwarming story of the most famous Akita, Hachiko, touches the hearts of people around the world and his story has been immortalized in literature, movies, and statues, cementing his place in history.

The story of Hachiko serves as a reminder of the pure and unwavering love that exists between humans and their canine companions.
