Hakone – Lake Ashinoko area

Hakone

Visitors to Lake Ashinoko can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, and fishing rainbow trout and smelt. You are treated to a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji by cruising on the boats – a spacious catamaran, a pirate ship or the latest addition, the Ninja land and water bus. You can also relax by the lakeside or soak in onsen baths.

Accommodations by Lake Ashinoko – with a view

Ryuguden Hakone is a popular hot spring resort run by the Prince Hotel group. The traditional Japanese architecture blends seamlessly with modern amenities to create a comfortable stay for visitors. Guests can unwind in the traditional onsen baths which are said to have healing powers. Most of the rooms come with a view of the lake and Mount Fuji. The best thing about this ryokan is the traditional dinner course and breakfast which you can enjoy in a Japanese-style room with western style chairs. You don’t have to sit on the tatami floor so it’s more comfortable for dining.

Hakone Prince Hotel is a big, modern hotel that I got lost going from one end to the other. The lobby floor is beautiful with sunlight streaming in from the many windows. The rooms offer breathtaking views of the lake and Mt. Fuji in the distance. The private path by the lakeside is a great place to go on a stroll in the morning, or at any time of the day. Their outdoor onsen bath is relaxing and rejuvenating.

Hanaori is a budget-friendly option overlooking the lake. Right outside the lobby area, there is a foot bath where you can relax and enjoy the view of the lake. Interesting mixture of both Japanese and western-style food is served in a casual restaurant buffet style.

How to get there

The Prince Hotel group runs a free shuttle bus from Odawara station east exit to the hotel so if you’re staying at Ryuguden or the Prince Hakone this is the best way to get to the Lake Ashinoko area. It’s about a 30-minute, scenic, winding ride up the mountains. Reservations are required. You can also take a taxi (around ¥7500) or the local bus (around ¥1500) from Odawara station to Lake Ashinoko.
