Enjoy creative robota-yaki at this super famous restaurant
Hyakushiki in Fukuoka is a restaurant loved by locals and tourists. It was one of the restaurants we looked forward to visiting after a friend from Fukuoka introduced it to us. Here you can enjoy traditional Fukuoka cuisine with a modern twist. The seats are arranged around a circular counter and from any seat you can enjoy a “live show” of the staff skillfully cooking. This izakaya (Japanese-style bar) operates from 13:00 to night time and it’s accommodating to children in the early hours.
Reservations
The restaurant is very popular so reservations are recommended. It’s possible to enter without a reservation but remember that the restaurant closes when it runs out of ingredients. Reservations can be made through Table Check or Instagram.
No English menu!
Unfortunately, they don’t have an English menu. However, this restaurant has an omakase (chef’s recommendation) menu. All the recommended dishes are on the omakase menu so it’s perfect for first-timers.
A la carte menu
One person one dish system
All dishes at Hyakushiki are served in small serving plates for one person. You don’t have to portion out the food and you can enjoy a variety of dishes so I thought the one portion-sized dishes were very convenient. Also, you can enjoy all sorts of dishes even if you come alone.
Prices are not mentioned on menu
The omakase course has a price but there is no price on the menu for a la carte dishes. It’s like a traditional, exclusive sushi restaurant. You can ask the server or scan the QR code for the prices but most of the dishes were in the ¥500 range per plate. After eating a satisfying portion, we paid around ¥18,000 for two people – not an eye-popping price so don’t worry!
What we actually ordered
Crunchy bell pepper. Popular menu at Hyakushiki – big, fresh bell pepper with miso.
Tuna sashimi and snap peas in season
Fresh seafood
Fried chicken wings and grilled chicken meat ball
To conclude your meal, rice cooked in an earthenware pot and garnish. The rice cooked in the pot takes time so you should order it at the beginning of your meal.
Drinks
Of course, the izakaya stocks a variety of alcoholic drinks! The server will take your order – ask for and try their recommended drinks.
