On the 5th floor of the Kabukiza theatre is a gem of a cafe where you can have excellent green tea. Even if you can’t make it to the actual kabuki performance on the ground floor of this building, try Jyugetsudo Ginza! The iced matcha green tea here was one of the best I’ve ever had.
History of Maruyama Nori-ten and Jyugetsudo
Jyugetsudo is run by Maruyama Nori-ten (Maruyama seaweed store) with a 170-year history. The main store is in Tsukiji and it was originally a dried seaweed wholesaler. If you go to a fancy Michelin-starred sushi or Japanese restaurant in Japan, the chances are high that the nori seaweed they use is from Maruyama. In 1980 they branched out to deal in quality green tea under the brand name of Jyugetsudo (寿月堂).
Designed by architect Kuma Kengo, the interior of Jyugetsudo Ginza is a serene space surrounded by 3000 bamboos similar to the Paris store also done by Kuma Kengo. It feels as though you’ve stepped into a bamboo forest – an urban oasis overlooking the rooftop Japanese-style garden.
Menu
The menu consists of various green tea drinks and sweets using home-made matcha and light meals such as green tea soba, onigiri rice balls, sandwiches with nori fillings, and matcha pasta.
You can also take classes where you can have a “Japanese tea experience” and learn how to pour green tea and make matcha green tea. Reservations can be made through:
There is a store at the entrance to the restaurant where you can buy the best green tea, nori seaweed and green tea sweets. Once you’ve tasted their nori seaweed you can’t go back to other nori from other stores.
