The Toyosu Market
The Toyosu Market is a destination for seafood lovers and families alike. For those of you who have visited Japan before October 2018, the aging Tsukiji “Inner” Market was replaced by the Toyosu Market.
The huge wholesale market is housed in three buildings. Two of the buildings are for seafood and one is for fruits and vegetables. Tourists can have limited views of the auctions and wholesale areas from observation windows above. Some areas require advance reservations. The auctions happen early in the morning so be prepared to get up early if you want to see the market in action.
New Dining and Spa Complex – Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai
A new commercial complex called Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai opened next to the Toyosu Market on February 1, 2024. It features restaurants, accommodation and hot-spring baths.
At the opening ceremony, Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike said, “By providing fresh, high-quality food unique to the market, we would like Tokyo citizens, people from Japan and abroad to experience the appeal of a wide variety of food.”
The restaurants of Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai pride themselves on sourcing their ingredients directly from the market, ensuring the highest quality and freshness in offering dishes such as sashimi bowls and sushi. There is also an area devoted to ramen and other casual dining.
You can soak in an open-air bath at the spa where you can have a view of Tokyo Bay. Visitors can also enjoy a footbath and 360-degree view.
Families with children can have a great time at the new complex. The children can learn about the seafood trade and they will definitely love sampling the fresh seafood dishes and soaking in an onsen bath. There are also interactive exhibits and demonstrations that aim to educate and entertain young visitors. The new Toyosu Dining and Spa complex is not just a place for food enthusiasts, but also a great destination for families looking for a fun and educational day out.
How to get there: Go to Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho line. Then, transfer to the Yurikamome waterfront line and get off at Shijo-Mae Station which is just one stop away. If you’re in the central Tokyo area, hopping on a taxi will be the easy way to get to Toyosu, especially if you’re traveling with small children.
