Modern Japanese Confectionery Store – Kikutaro

Fukuoka

Long-established Japanese confectionery store right near Hakata station

Kikutaro is a confectionery store with origins in Kita Kyushu. This branch just opened in 2023 near Hakata station on the first floor of Miyako Hotel Hakata.

A Japanese confectionery store has the image of being formal and stuffy but this new Kikutaro, which comes with a cafe space, has bright, modern vibes.

Various refined Japanese sweets – recommended for gifts

Traditional odango (dumplings) and dorayaki (pancakes with bean jam) line the shelves. The unbaked sweets in the showcase are fresh and do not last long, but the other baked goods last longer and can be stored at room temperature – perfect for souvenirs.

The reasonably priced boxed gift sets are especially perfect for gifts. There are also western-style cookies and coffee beans. Their original character looking a lot like the Japanese folk tale character Momotaro is kawaii (cute).

Kikutaro Cafe

There is a cafe inside Kikutaro where you can have Japanese sweets and coffee, as well as salads and deli food. Try the odango (dumplings on skewers) which you can roast by yourself on the charcoal brazier – it’s very interesting.

The skewered odangos come with three types of bean paste which you can dip the odango in according to taste. Another famous item is the warabi-mochi drink (made from bracken-starch) .

It’s similar to a tapioca milk tea but instead of tapioca there is warabi-mochi inside. Various flavors are available with seasonal flavors too. The warabi-mochi is softer than tapioca and smooth to drink.

Take-out is possible. When eating in, take a numbered ticket and wait for an available seat. Seats are limited so you may have to wait a while.
